The decision

The purchase, the move

The summer of 2000 was a rough time. I had been working for NBCi in San Francisco for the past couple of years and was feeling like it was time to move on. As a native of Albany, NY I had been feeling the urge to return to the Northeast for the past few years. Between the end of my marriage and getting burned out at my job, I figured it was time to start looking. The first place I applied, Lycos in Massachusetts flew me out for an interview at the end of July. A week later I had taken the job and given notice.

About this time my friend Nick told me about this great deal on a Sportster 883. I had been wanting a Softail or 1200 Sportster for years and the 883 seemed a bit underpowered to me (some biker friends of mine refer to this model as the 'skirtster')... of course up until then, I had never even ridden a Harley so what the hell did I know.

One ride was all it took. I've owned 3 different bikes before the 883, a
'73 Suzuki dirt bike, an '83 Kawasaki GPZ550 (freakin' awesome bike!) and a '75 Honda CB400F. After about 6 seconds on the Harley, I was hooked. I love the way it feels; for me it's just a lot more fun to ride. Skirtster my ass, this bike was a blast!

After a nice 100-mile test ride on
Skyline up and down the San Francisco peninsula I decided to buy the bike.
